Today’s beach plans went belly up as soon as we poked our noses outside. It was much colder than yesterday. The kind of cold that makes you think twice about getting out of bed. So, no beach walks or epic runs today. Today was a car day.
We set off around eleven and headed for Thessaloniki. After a mandatory stop at Lidl, it was time to fill up. And that was a whole other story. We drove around a bit looking for a decent petrol station, because prices were sky-high. But in the end, we found a good one and mission accomplished.
Instead of carrying straight on along the E90 towards Turkey, Daddy Edu decided to improvise. We veered off towards that strange peninsula east of Thessaloniki, the one with the three “fingers” sticking out into the sea. It’s called Chalkidiki, and the three fingers are Kassandra, Sithonia, and Athos. The third one, Athos, is a no-go zone. It’s monastery territory and only men with special permits are allowed in. Honestly, it’s more exclusive than a new sofa without dog hair on it.
We drove a bit into the first finger, Kassandra, to have a nose around. We stopped at a cove, parked the camper, had lunch inside, and then headed down some stairs to the beach. It wasn't really a day for lying out, but Daddy Edu tried it anyway, in a “I’ve come here to relax and I’m going to relax even if it’s freezing” kind of way. Meanwhile, I was busy supervising.
We didn't stay long, so we climbed back up and continued by car, following the coast towards the second finger. Eventually, we found a spot near Polygyros, or something like that—we aren't quite sure of the exact name. But the spot itself we are sure about: it’s a cracker. Nature, open sea views, and a sunset that makes you stop and stare, even if you don't quite understand why.
Mind you, there was a bit of rubbish in the area again. Not as much as on yesterday's beach, but enough to remind you that humans are a bit of a disaster. I don’t leave anything behind, apart from sand on towels.
We’re staying the night here. Quiet, lovely, and plenty of space. More of a driving day than a walking day, but hey, those happen too. We'll see if the temperature picks up tomorrow... or if we’ll still be in full-on coat mode.
