Day 11:

Grey day, final Lidl and last Greek night

Porto Lagos – Feres

Geluidsbestand

Today was one of those days where the body says “no way” and the brain replies “fair enough, we’ll see later.” We were dead to the world and woke up super late. Outside, it was grey and cold, too. No beach, no desire to do anything. The perfect plan for doing absolutely nothing.

So, we took it extremely easy. So extremely that we didn’t start the car until two o’clock. We left Porto Lagos without any hurry and with that “well, we’ll see what happens today” attitude.

First quick stop: the St. Nicholas Monastery, near Porto Lagos. It’s on a small island, connected to the land by a wooden walkway, and it looks lovely from the shore, like a postcard. We looked at it from afar… because getting closer was another matter entirely. There were so many people. I mean, heaps. We don’t know what was going on, but it looked more like a party than a monastery. So, we decided to use the “look, nod, and keep going” technique.

We got back to the car and carried on. We stopped in Nea Chili, in a car park by the sea. The views were really good, open sea, cliffs nearby… but the car park was full of litter. Lots of it. The kind that makes you think some humans should live in their own car for a while to learn some manners.

Even so, we found a decent enough corner and parked. We ate in the camper and then went out for a walk along the coast. We saw the cliff, the beach, everything was quite pretty… but with another main character: the stray dogs.

There were several, and one in particular decided I was his project for the day. Persistent as a wasp at a picnic. He kept coming over, pestering me, circling… I kept my cool and my dignity, but honestly, it didn’t help the experience.

After the walk, we made an important stop: Lidl. An official farewell. Because there aren’t any in Turkey, and you have to come to terms with that bit by bit. Dad Edu went in for supplies as if it were the end of the world. I waited outside, reflecting on life and the lack of croquetas.

To sleep, we went to a spot we already knew from our trip two and a half years ago: a picnic area near a church, Agia Paraskevi Korusu, in Feres. There’s something nice about returning to places like this. Back then, it was our first stop in Greece after crossing over from Turkey. And now… it’s the last one before crossing back the other way.

Last time, it was full of people, noise, motorbikes, cars, beer bottles… plenty of activity. Today, however, nothing. Total silence. Not a soul. As if someone had switched the place off.

We parked in a corner with a good view, calm and undisturbed. And here we stay.

Last night in Greece. Tomorrow we cross. Let’s see what’s waiting for us on the other side. Just in case, I’m already prepared. Because you never know where the next ball is going to pop up.
