Castles, walkways and bridges that tickle your feet

We slept like little bears in hibernation… well, more or less. The place was very quiet, no cars, no noise and with that whisper of peace that I like to sleep soundly. We started calmly, but even so we left before 11 (for us that's early). First stop less than ten minutes by car was Montsonís, a small village perched on top of a hill with views of the valley and a castle that seems straight out of a fairy tale. Montsonís is a town with barely a few dozen inhabitants where silence is the order of the day and where the Castle of Montsonís, built around the year 1024 to defend the area in times of border, still dominates everything from above. Walking through its streets makes you feel like you are in a medieval movie, with old houses, walls and that air of a secret place that makes you sniff everything carefully.

We parked on the outskirts and took a walk through the village. There's not much going on around here, but it looks nice. The castle rises majestically and the view towards the plain below is like a giant canvas painted by giant hands. If I had four more legs I would use them to applaud, but with the ones I have I already said "this is cool".

After smelling every stone, we followed the route and, after an hour by car, we arrived at the Congost del Mu car park. Here it already smelled of adventure: some panels said that the Congost del Mu is a natural gorge where the Segre River has been chiseling its way between impressive rock walls, forming a spectacular and less known landscape than other gorges in the area.

The weather was good, so we took the opportunity to walk. The first thing was a very easy stretch to the hydroelectric plant of Alòs de Balaguer, a small installation next to the river that has been using the energy of the water to generate electricity for decades. It is not a giant dam, but its presence gives character to the environment and on top of that it serves as a reference to start the route.

We walked along walkways hanging over the river. I, of course, in Daddy Edu's arms, because that steel grid floor is not suitable for my little paws! We passed a suspension bridge over the Segre River (pont penjant del Congost del Mu), which was so long that I thought it was for tremendous mountain goats... but it worked for us too.

Then things got more fun: we climbed up more demanding trails and reached the so-called Estret del Mu, an even narrower and more spectacular stretch of the gorge, with concrete walkways that my little paws could step on. Here the landscape looked like a natural cathedral of rock, water and green.

The return was a mix of old and modern tunnels. We passed through an old tunnel full of mud and totally dark, where I almost confused Edu with a mud ghost, and then through a modern, well-lit road tunnel where I relaxed thinking about flying bones.

In the end, the walk was almost 13 kilometers in about 3 hours of pure good vibes, incredible landscapes and a lot of "what's that smell?" from me.

We recovered the car and after almost an hour and a half more of route (we only stopped to eat something quick between turns), we went to the south of Lleida until we reached a cool place to sleep: Tozal de Carrassumada, near Torres de Segre. It is a huge dirt car park, right next to the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Carrassumada, a small, simple church but with history dating back to the 17th century. From there, you can see wide views of the plain, with huge skies and horizons that seem infinite.

Here we are alone, with absolute tranquility and that silence that is only broken by the wind and my plans to sniff every bush. We ate in the camper (it was about time, almost five o'clock), we rested and decided that we would stay here to sleep.

Today was one of those days that feel good inside: tiny castles with a thousand years of history, spectacular gorges, suspension bridges that tickle the stomach and a quiet place to close your eyes happily.
