Day 23:

Snow, waterfalls and shelter from the wind

Arpacı – Akyurt

Today was a long day on the road. We set off at a relaxed pace, with no particular rush, and headed towards Erzincan. To get there, we had to cross the Sakaltutan Geçidi mountain pass, at an altitude of around 2,160 metres. And up there, it felt like someone had swapped Turkey for an industrial freezer.

Everything was covered in snow. White mountains, icy wind, and a cold that left my snout stiffer than a penguin doing yoga. We stopped for a moment at a motorway rest area for the official photo session. I put on my best adventurous-dog face for exactly thirty seconds and then was the first to head back to the camper's heater. Being epic is all well and good until your paws freeze.

We continued our descent towards Erzincan, made a quick stop at a supermarket, and then set course for the Gürlevik waterfall. But before seeing it, we found a rather lovely spot in the countryside to eat in the camper, surrounded by greenery. One of those places where you imagine spending the whole afternoon… until someone says, "Right, let's keep going."

The Gürlevik waterfall is about thirty metres high and cascades over several levels, surrounded by trees, restaurants, and picnic areas. You can tell that it must get quite busy and lively during the season, but now it was almost empty, with a slightly abandoned feel, like a summer park that hasn't yet woken up from winter.

Truth be told, the waterfall is nice, but it didn't exactly blow us away. Perhaps we’ve clocked up too many kilometres and have become professional landscape snobs. Even so, the place had its own strange, silent, and half-asleep charm.

Afterwards, we continued north, rejoined the motorway, and didn't stop much more. Daddy Edu driving, Uncle Joan playing music, and me alternating between sleeping and supervising the landscape, which is hard and underappreciated work.

To sleep, we found a curious spot near the village of Akyurt, in a sort of abandoned quarry. It might not be the most beautiful corner of the world, but we are protected from the wind, and right now that’s worth more than a spectacular view. Because sleeping sheltered, warm, and without the camper shaking all night… that really is the luxury of a travelling dog.
